The Ayuy Caves

After spending the afternoon exploring Las Cuevas de Ayuy, I stopped at a local restaurant for something to eat. I asked the staff for some recommendations on how to spend the rest of my day. The staff gave me directions to what they thought would be the best sunset on the island. The place was located a few kilometers from Ayuy, lost in the middle of nowhere. How lucky was I to have followed their advice! It was indeed one of the most incredible sunsets of my entire trip through Europe in 2020.

The Ajuy Caves are located in the small village of Ajuy, which has about 150 inhabitants, and is about 9.5 km from Pájara.

The village is part of the rural park of Betancuria, one of the protected areas of Fuerteventura. These natural caves that lava flows have formed in the cliffs, some of which are 40 meters high, are one of the main tourist attractions of Ajuy.
