Quito, Ecuador 🇪🇨
And in the end, all I learned was how to be strong… Alone. 🥀
Did you know that Ecuador was the first Latin American country to grant women the right to vote? The arrival of Catholicism greatly contributed to the establishment of a patriarchal society where women were relegated to the domestic sphere and had to submit to the will of their husbands.
To put that into context, Ecuadorian women in 1929 rarely enjoyed the same citizenship rights as men. Although Ecuadorian women have come a long way in the last hundred years at the socio-economic and political levels, they still face many problems in each of these areas. Their rights have not always been respected, and women in rural areas are particularly affected by this problem. However, as more and more Ecuadorian women take up political positions and work outside their home, there is hope that they will achieve greater equality and influence in the near future.
